Year 8 Information, Advice and Guidance Event
As part of our programme of support and guidance for students choosing their GCSE subjects please find below a presentation from Mr. A. Thomas, Deputy Head Teacher.
Students at Devonport High School for Girls take ten GCSEs.
The following subjects are compulsory:
- English Language and English Literature (2 GCSEs)
- Mathematics (1 GCSE)
- Science either Separate Science (3 GCSEs) or Combined Science (2 GCSEs)
The following subjects are compulsory but not examined:
- Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education
- Social Studies
- Core Physical Education
Students are also required to take other GCSE subjects to make up their ten GCSEs. At least one subject must be chosen from Geography or History, and they must choose at least one Foreign Language. You may choose more than one subject in either of these categories, e.g. you could take History and Geography if you wish. These subjects will be placed in specific option blocks and shared with students and their families at the GCSE Options Evening Event on the 20th February 2023.

- Geography
- History
- French
- Spanish
- Chinese
- German
- Latin
- Computer Studies
- Physical Education
- Drama
- Religious Studies
- Food Preparation and Nutrition
- Art and Design (either Fine Art or Textiles)
- Music
- Business
At this event we will explain the options process in more detail, and we will issue an options booklet and form to students. This event will provide an opportunity for parents/carers and students to meet and discuss the students’ suitability for a particular course with subject teachers.
