Plessey Semiconductors

Year 12 Physics class went on a tour of Plessey Semiconductors

During their Physics lessons on Tuesday, the Year 12 Physics class went on a tour of Plessey Semiconductors, an award winning leader in the development of advanced optoelectronic components. Based in Roborough, it was a short drive in the minibus followed by a talk, tours, product demonstrations and question and answer session. Students enjoyed testing out Augmented Reality glasses and found out about the complexity of engineering products on a microscopic scale. They also spoke to some graduates and apprentice employees to find out about the different routes into engineering that are available to them post A-Level. The tours incorporated, viewing the clean room – which is cleaner than an operating theatre – and the sub fabrication floor where some students had hands on experience of using a multi-million pound “Reactor”, which is used to grow micro-LED components. Many thanks to Plessey for hosting us, and also for sponsoring the Physics department through the supply of electronic circuit boards from the UKESF
