Devonport High School for Girls

Social Enterprise

On Tuesday the 8th of October, Year 9 were set an Enterprise task to design, market and promote a new flip-flop, pencil case, backpack or product of their choice for the social enterprise Gandy’s.

Two brothers were orphaned by the 2004 tsunami, and started a social initiative, the flip-flop brand Gandy’s to help orphans in developing countries. Their foundation funds projects around the world provide orphaned children with basic essentials such as nutrition, education and a safe place to live. Year 9’s aim was to focus on the ethical and sustainable element of the brand whilst keeping the Gandy mission at the heart of their ideas. They learnt that there are thousands of businesses using the power of social enterprise to make a difference on issues such as poverty, climate change and homelessness. The teams were creative, enterprising, innovative and showed how fantastic their skills are in communication, teamwork and problem solving. Well done to the winning team from 9E.
