Devonport High School for Girls

Skills South West

Year 10 students attended Skills South West 2019 at Plymouth Pavilions on Wednesday 13th March as part of our careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) programme and to mark National Careers Week.

The event gave students a range of interactive, inspiring and informative activities run by industry experts to show the range of possible career paths, including apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships.

The healthcare sector proved to be very popular, with the chance to intubate a model patient and attempt key-hole surgery on offer.  It was great to see a DHSG Alumnus, Paula Howarth, enjoying her role in Human Resources with Burts Crisps and showing current students what can be achieved with hard work and taking opportunities on offer.  A particular highlight was Maggie challenging stereotypes by showing the bricklaying apprentices with Barratt Developments that girls can do as good, if not better job, than boys!

Students came away with lots of good ideas for their futures, which will be developed further during their visit to Plymouth University Open Day in June and work experience placements during Enrichment Week.  Thank you to Prospects for organising the event and all the contributors that gave their time talking to our students.
