Leading Edge

Leading Edge update: June 2009.

The following account details the work over the last academic year (2008-9), and the planned work for this academic year (2009-10).

2008-9 academic year: Work undertaken

Strategy

Infomation

Strategy 1: Developing Leaders

To develop capacity at Middle Leadership level across schools in Plymouth ( Tamarside, Stoke Damarel, John Kitto, Notre Dame, DHSB, DHSB, Heles) and to contribute to the City of Plymouths succession planning work. The aim is to engage middle leaders in discussion and thoughts on progression to Senior Leadership

We have worked with the LA to design a course over the year addressing the issues faced by ML and SLT. This course is also accredited by UCP Marjon. (60 credits towards a PGcert/PG dip/M.Ed.

Strategy 2: Department work

Art: To share art work of the students of Plymouth on an on-line gallery. To buy in 'artists in residence' to share good practice with other Plymouth schools and to release our Head of Art to visit other schools to disseminate good practice. Another Art initiative is work undertaken with a local primary school. This work focuses on the year 6-7 transition and aims to build both student and teacher confidence with regards to the criteria for art marking and appreciation.

Maths: Revision sessions with C/D borderline students from a local Com College. (Eggbuckland) and to improve confidence and performance of gifted mathematicians in our own and other schools.

English: Joint planning of the KS3 schemes of work with other local schools in Plymouth, focussing on AfL and functional skills. Joint planning and delivery of the new AS and A2 English lit specifications with the aim of increasing pupil engagement and advancing teacher knowledge.

Strategy 3: Learning to Learn

Embed L2L in all lessons from Sept 2009. This will cover the PLTs initiative from the new national curriculum. Our aim is that subjects to develop generic strategies to use in their classrooms to ensure the 4 L2L dispositions and their associated capacities become part of a common learning language. This should lead to improved levels of 'challenge/risk' that the students are exposed to in their curriculum.

Student voice . Engage students in their learning and what helps them to learn effectively.

Strategy 4: Pre-exam briefings

To ensure students are fully engaged with the requirements for each if the examinations they sit. This year we have introduced these ‘warm-ups’ for AS examinations as well.

2009-10 academic year: Planned work

Strategy

Information

Strategy 1: Developing Leaders

  • to continue with a 2 nd cohort of middle leaders training working with UCP Marjon and the LA.
  • I have introduced the Leadership Development Grant opportunities for 3 colleagues on our school and 3 in a further 3 schools ( JKCC, DHSB and Tamarside) Please see appendix 1 for the proforma and the rationale)

Strategy 2: Department work

Art: continues to develop the LE work. Innovative and creative as usual.

Maths: continues to develop the work started and is now branching into supporting primary students in addition to the work at KS3 and 4.

RS: a new project involving a cross city conference for post-16 students from all Plymouth secondary schools. This will involve inviting inspirational speakers to address teachers and students.

English: continuing with the work undertaken last year. Evaluations show much appreciation from all other schools involved.

G&T: Support for an innovative TLP day where a steel band will inspire creativity in the TLP cohort!

PE: a new strategy to liaise with primary colleagues to increase participation and confidence

Strategy3: Learning to Learn

Continue the pilot work undertaken and embed across the curriculum for Sept 2009. Delivery to all staff on the twilight in June 09. This is a project involving 3 other schools who are all working with the same philosophy, but in very different contexts. Our recent ‘assessor visit’ was very interested in the work undertaken as is the SSAT.

Strategy 4: Pre-exam briefings

To continue to ensure students are fully engaged with the requirements for each in the examinations they sit.
